MediaLab focuses on research, technological development and innovation in multimedia, multimodal content and cultural heritage technologies.
Its work is connected with the broader research scope of the Department of Speech, Content and Multimedia Technologies of ILSP / Athena Research Center, covering the analysis, processing, recognition and synthesis of signals and content. This includes speech and human communication signals, image and video processing, computer graphics, virtual and augmented reality, multimodal interaction and data from multiple sensors.
MediaLab also builds on long-standing expertise in cultural heritage technologies. Its research includes 2D and 3D digitisation, multimedia processing, feature extraction, indexing and content-based retrieval, semantic representation of cultural content, GIS applications in cultural heritage, multispectral recording, virtual museums, interactive 3D environments and multimedia systems for culture and education.
A central part of this activity is connected with Clepsydra, the Cultural Heritage Digitisation Laboratory of Athena Research Center. Clepsydra supports the digitisation, preservation, organisation, management, promotion and dissemination of cultural heritage assets, with specialised infrastructure for 2D/3D digitisation, digital replicas, 3D reconstruction, visualisation and digital collections.
